ChrisBDSP, congrats on the new addition to your giraffe family....Ruby is a beauty. How soon will you allow her to mix with Sophie (who looks very interested from the other side of the fence in the posted photo)and is it problematic introducing giraffes to each other for the first time....are they normally agressive? They seem quite docile creatures. Not that I know any personally! Anyhow, good luck. She's gorgeous.

Welcome back, Ann and I hope you had a terrific time! Canoeing with the manatees sounds fantastic. Perhaps you can send a photo or two to JaneG for us to see? Thanks Pamela and Suzanne for the baby hippo links. They are gorgeous, aren't they? The one in Poland couldn't get out of the pond....I wanted to lend a helping hand to scoop her out of the water.

Pygmy Hippo
SuzanneSuzanne on 2nd Sep 2010
Hi everyone - love the pygmy hippo baby! Edinburgh Zoo also has pygmy hippos and a baby was born last year - a female. She's now quite big! Here's the link to the zoo site and news item http://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/news-and-events/news/articles/news_0071.html. Best wishes to all - special thanks to Mouselady for the continuing Mousterpieces - they are so wonderful - and to Bucko for the night goggles. You two have something really creative going here!

Dot & Ailsa are in the boudoir resting at 5:49 am here, 10:49am there. A bird is picking at Dots horns and she doesn't seem to care. I wonder if she crosses her eyes as it moves from her big horn to the smaller one.

06.15 Morning DAWGs and ChrisBDSP. Presume that is Jane and Graham snoozing together this morning, the ears swish and bend forward which seems to be a trait of Graham. Looks as though it could be a nice day at BDSP today. Wonder if Dot and Ailsa are home yet ? We had a lovely video on our news this morning and I thought I would share it with everyone. Hope you all enjoy watching. There is something fascinating about these 'big' babies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dge7gegzR3k Have a good day everyone, I am off out for some retail therapy with my daughter ! I may never be seen again - ha ha ! Thanks for the great night report Bucko.

late night rhino report--an early morning mud wallow.
buckobucko on 2nd Sep 2010
5:30a.m. 12:30a.m.EST Hello Pamela and everyone, I am adjusting my night vision goggles to zoom in on our rhino family. I see Graham has stepped into the kitchen to make a nice cup of chamomile tea..He is careful handling the teapot which is now whistling, and he pours the steaming water into two delicate cups and lets the tea steep....careful, it's hot. He brings a cup out for Jane and one for himself. Jane shoots him an admiring glance. Each of them blow on the top of the cup, cooling it off before taking a sip. The aroma floods the air in waves. He goes back in the kitchen and grabs some graham crackers to snack on. He offers Jane a graham cracker and both discuss the upcoming day at BDSP and drift back to sleep. In the distance, I see Dot and Ailsa arriving for an early morning mud wallow. Dot is scooping the mud with her feet to get the mud wallow just right. She gets in and digs with her feet to get the mud wallow just the way she likes it. Ailsa follows with a slight hesitation at first, as she takes a deliberate step in and then another, each step with renewed confidence. Dot rolls over on her side, and sess Ailsa from the corner of her eye, and Dot spots that Ailsa is watching her, copying each move she makes...First one side is coated in mud,and she leans over to coat the other side.....Dot and Ailsa are beaming now that they are both covered in mud. Ah, the wonder of mud, thick glorious mud...a natural coolant and bug spray all rolled into one.Dot has a plush towel wrapped around her head so the mud doesn't get in her eyes, and wraps a towel around Ailsa's head too,as they step out of the mud wallow and head toward home and new adventures at BDSP.bucko

Re: Rhino ears
buckobucko on 2nd Sep 2010
2:30a.m. your time 9:30p.m.EST Hi Stephanie & all DAWGS,, It's almost like their ears get set for auto pilot when they snooze. I can even tell Graham apart from the others by watching his ears..I think it's probably just an instinctive, protective way to make up for their poor eye sight. I've read where rhinos have a good sense of hearing and smell. I like to think they can go into a deep sleep..They look very comfortable and relaxed in their BDSP surroundings. Right now, I bet Graham is dreaming while his ears go forward and back. bucko

Dorothy, or Dot, the Southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum) was brought to Blair Drummond Safari Park from a reserve in South Africa in 2003, along with 2 other rhinos called Graham and Jane, to expand the European wide conservation program of this species. They generally don’t breed very well in captivity so every calf born is vitally important to maintaining a sustainable population. Dot, who is 9 years old, is the mother of our calf Mazoomba, or Maz, who was born at Blair Drummond in August 2007 and was a huge hit with staff and customers alike. Dot is now expecting her second calf sometime around mid-December, however with rhino this is not an exact science and our guess could be over a month out. But don’t worry, our head keepers will keep you updated with all the latest developments on the blog which can be found below the webcam images.

Rhino calves are usually born under the cover of darkness, with Maz appearing at sometime between 2 - 5am, so if you hope to catch it live it may be a long night. However a video of the successful birth will be posted on our website for you all to enjoy, if you can’t stay up that late! You may not be able to see the rhino usually between 9 - 11am most mornings as Dot is locked out of her indoor pen so it can be cleaned. If you cannot see her at other times she will be outside in her covered yard enjoying the fresh air. Due to this time of year and the cold temperatures, she will be closed in her indoor pen over night when we are expecting her to give birth, so we don’t risk the health of the new born calf.
