Hi Ann, yesterday
Hi Ann,
yesterday most of the chimps were outside for a large part of the day as the weather was much better and we noticed that even the newer chimps were venturing out much farther than they have before, which was great to see. One of the new females Lianne is in oestrus so she has a swollen bottom and this basically signals to the males that she is ready to mate so lots of the males were following her around. Up until now the newer chimps have been less likely to move up into the part of the outdoor enclosure the webcam shows as they are still finding their feet in the outside enclosure. They came from Beekse Bergen safari park in Holland last year and apparently when they were there as well they didn't go outside that much. Mostly that's because they are former lab chimps and had no previous experience of being on grass etc.
Maybe it might be possible to get different camera views eventually, the current view is based on a camera that was originally a security camera. As you say getting closer might mean the chimps could reach it which would definitely be a problem!
Hope you get a chance to see some more chimps soon : )
feeding time
Although it's not a guarantee you may be more likely to see some chimps around 11.45am as this is the time they are fed while a public keeper talk is given at the same time. Only when weather is really bad or chimps don't have access outside for some reason will this not happen.
Also the chimpanzees generally don't have access to the outside enclosure between ~ 5.45pm and ~ 9am.
There are currently 21 chimpanzees at Edinburgh zoo ranging in ages from 12 years old up to 50 years of age. This large group was created recently by the addition of 10 chimpanzees from Beekse-bergen safari park in the Netherlands to the original Edinburgh group of 11 animals. The introductions had to be carried out very slowly and carefully but were very successful although the new chimpanzees are still a little wary of the large outdoor enclosure so any you see on the webcam are more likely to be from the original group.
Thank you chimpkeepers. I
Thank you chimpkeepers. I can't see any today, but it appears to be raining up in bonny Scotland so I expect they're staying inside.
!
Hi Carol, it was a bit rainy and cold most of today so although some of the chimps were out at 11.45 for a feed during the talk they didn't hang about. As I write this it is a bit brighter and drier and you might see some chimps later as they will have access outside all night tonight but they do tend to be early bedders! Our oldest chimp Ricky who is 50 this year did sit out quite a lot today despite the rain ( he likes to keep out of squabbles), but where he often sits is to the right of the current view on the webcam. Hope you see some eventually : )

Visit
I was at the Zoo on Wednesday, The Sunbears were very playfull but did not go out of the enclosure. I had my camcorder with me and got some good footage of them playing.
I wish I knew a way to share the video of them with you all.

Invisable
I have logged onto this camera quite a few times now and have yet to see the Sun Bears, But thanks to JaneG for the link, I watched them as they were let outside there enclosure for the first time. I think I will visit the Zoo next week as It was March since I was their last.
