Dublin Zoo's herd of Asian elephants living on the Kaziranga Trail is made up of Bernadhine, her sister Jasmine and her calf Asha and Budi. Bernadhine and Jasmine came from Rotterdam Zoo in The Netherlands to live in Dublin in 2007.
Herds of Asian elephants are made up of females and the herd is led by an older cow known as the matriarch. At Dublin Zoo Bernadhine is the matriarch.
Amazing Fact:
There used to be millions of elephants living throughout Asia. Today only an estimated 35,000-50,000 may be left in the wild.
