Sparrowhawk Island
Camera
About
Based in a wood in Cheshire, these cameras follow every aspect of the Sparrowhawk’s life; from nesting to feeding time.
The seven cameras are dedicated to the Sparrowhawk's activities and are often moved to the best position of current action. They offer an insightful and engaging opportunity to view the day to day activities of these rare birds.
Latest news:
Since the beginning of November the male Sparrowhawk has been back and guarding his territory from the threat of other male intruders. He is busy trying to attract a female which joined him on November the 12th; we are hopeful they will nest here again as they were disturbed this year by construction of a new bridge on the island, it seems promising as the male is here every day.
He should chose a nest site by the end of December and then start construction of nest, it usually takes about 4 months to build, and construction usually takes place at first light and in the afternoon. Keep an eye on the camera as you should see a lot of courtship taking place!
Sparrowhawk eggs are laid at the beginning of May and juveniles leave the wood at the end of August.

Long Tailed Tits
Hi Dave
It's a real shame about the Long Tailed Tits nest as I have only ever found one nest that survived attacks in any way.
I bet your pleased at not having to cut the grass for a while.

sue /great tit female
Hi sue
your right the female never returned, she hasnt looked right for a while,i got in jane said the female hadnt returned.
so i bought the chicks in they were very cold and wouldnt have lasted the night,i warmed them up and fed them, next morning i found other nest to put the chicks in,there was too many to put in one nest so the odd ones are in bluetit nests and are feeding them ok.
they have a good chance now of surviving. regards Dave

Hi Dave
I thought i saw a sad sight on here last night, I was watching till 9.15pm and the female parent in one of the boxes hadn't returned to the nest. The young ones looked quite weak, and i fear they may have died. Am i right Dave ? if so any idea what happened to her. Enjoying watching the cams as always. Hope you and family are ok
Regards Sue

Re Long Tailed Tits
Dave,
If you didn't catch that on film then you would not think a mouse had done that damage. If I had found those chicks minus their heads then I would have thought a weasel or stoat had done it.
